Street Special: streets around the Forbidden City
On the eastern most point of the Wusi Street is the National Art Museum of China.
The National Art Museum of China houses the best from the Chinese World of Art. It was built during the sixties and symbolizes the accomplishments of the time. The design was rated among the ten top architectural designs of the 60s.
Now it displays mainly the works of contemporary Chinese artists. As a state gallery, it displays only the best from around China.
The art gallery is definitely the mainstream thought of the time. If you come and visit here in the 60s, 70s and 80s, you bet the exhibits are different and by looking at the work of art, you could get a rough sense of the outside world
This street, beginning as Wenjingjie, extending through Jingshanqianjie and now Wusidajie, gives you the quintessence of Chinese history in one stroll. And it doesn't end here. Stroll on from this intersection further north and south, and you will find more distinguished old bookstores, publishing houses, and theatres, all of which played their own role in the emergence of modern day China.
If we say Beijing is the cultural and historical center of China, then it's no exaggeration to say this street is the cultural and historical street of Beijing. It has witnessed history and grown with it. You are watching Travelogue Street Special and I hope to see you around more of my strolls.
